I’m learning how to utilize Twitter for my new writing side hustle.
Social media, like Twitter, is important because it allows you to reach people locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Having a social media presence without an appropriate strategy isn’t helpful. So, starting with Twitter, I’m going to figure out how to build my brand: Don’t Overthink It.
I started tweeting to support my writing here at Medium, and 41 people currently follow me. The only work I’ve done to curate this number was to randomly tweet, follow many, and ask followers who to follow. It has been a slow process and I believe that I’m going about this the wrong way. So, it is time to do some research.
What I’ve Learned
I spent some of this afternoon scouring the internet for information on how to get more followers on Twitter. Despite some conflicting information, I was able to compile a list of tips for myself and others to follow. All advice has been sourced and referenced below for further reading.
- Tweet Often — Twitter needs a more proactive approach. Tweeting 3–7 times a day is recommended, but some companies tweet up to 20 times or more a day.
- Fresh Content — Tweet about relevant industry articles, buzzworthy info, breaking news, and personal updates. Don’t forget the branded hashtags. Tweeting for a brand requires effort, thus it is worth noting the importance of fresh content.
- Timing — Some say it is best to tweet during weekdays in the early and late afternoons. However, this is where I found conflicting information. I saw most people encouraging the use of social media schedulers. Get insights using information from Sprout Social, Hootsuite, TweetDeck or Buffer to schedule timely posts, if necessary.
- Use Images — Tweets with images receive more likes, shares, and retweets than those without them. Pictures are better at stopping serial scrollers and encourage pay attention to your post.
- Engage Others — Make sure to actively retweet, reply, and favorite tweets from people in your industry and beyond. This will get your name in front of them and possibly make them more likely to follow.
- Your Profile — People are suspect of incomplete profiles. Having a clean profile picture, relevant tags to your industry and a little personality will go a long way.
- Follow Likeminded People — Simply put, they’re more likely to follow you back. They recommend following smaller accounts when using this tactic because they are more likely to see that you’ve observed them.
- Participate in Trending Hashtags — Staying current is essential. When you see a trending topic that is relevant to your brand, tweet, and don’t forget that humor is handy.
My New Approach:
I think the eight suggestions are helpful, and I plan to apply them to my Twitter account over the next few weeks. I will write again about how these steps have been working for me.
